Lesson Plan 8Facing fears. (ART. GRADES: All) ACTIVITY: Divide into groups of six students. Look at the picture of Winslow Homer's painting, Breezing up. What do you think the sailors were feeling? Have you ever been afraid? Why? What did you do to overcome your fears? With your group make a list of 10 things you would need on a boat to use in an emergency. Now make a list individually of the 10 or more things you will need to overcome your fears. Compare Breezing up to Neal Petersen's vessel. What things are different? What equipment is needed to sail around the world? Design your own ship with whatever equipment you think you may need in the future, (even if it has not been invented yet!) Where can you look to get information about boat building? Make a model using recycled materials. MATERIALS: Copy of the picture of Winslow Homer's painting, Breezing up, pen and paper, recycled materials. Lesson plan by Kate Bibbs |
