Lesson Plan 11

Broken Voyage.

READING

This week the students in my Learning Discipline class read a story called "Broken Voyage". This is a true story about a family that attempted to sail around the world in a 43-foot sailboat named the Lucite. They set sail from England and made their way halfway around the world to the Pacific Ocean. Their sailboat was struck by a killer whale, and the family had to abandon the boat. They survived on a raft and rowboat for 38 days before being rescued.

After reading the story, the students drew a sailboat. I went over with them the parts of the sailboat. The students then labeled the parts of the sailboat. This was a great story because you can incorporate all subject areas. We had the world map out while reading the story, so the students could visualize the voyage and where they were. We talked about what direction they were sailing.

In English the students did a journal entry on imagining being on board the Lucite as it started to sink. And what would be the first thing you might do to help the situation.

In science we discussed killer whales and the different types of whales. This week we have spent a lot of time on the whaling industry. Also in science we plan to construct balsa wood boats using different shapes (math) for the hull and the sail.
